NORTHERN STORM
THUNDER vs WOOLGOOLGA WOLVES
TRIAL MATCH PREVIEWS
YOUTH LEAGUE
Northern Storm’s Youth League side will not forget last year’s away
game at High Street Oval when they took home the points with a 1-0 (13 June
2009) win, courtesy of a bullet Mykel Watson free-kick, in an impressive
defensive display. The defensive line for that particular match consisted of
Jason Breton himself (filling in as an over-age player), Luke Schafer, Dave
Gourley (over-age) and Tim Klingbiel with Toby Wertheim in goals. Only one of those five will take part in this year’s trial encounter, a sign
that Northern Storm have rung the changes for season 2010. Both the Northern
Storm and Woolgoolga sides will have a number of last year’s Under 16s players
stepping up to senior football this year, and the freshness of both sides will
surely make for an interesting encounter.
1ST GRADE
Northern Storm will be keen to start their preparations for the 2010
season on a high note. The side have been training together for six weeks under
the expert guidance of Jason Breton and assistant Neil Brayshaw, and will be
keen to avenge last year’s defeats – a narrow 2-1 away defeat under Rob Harbour
(13th June 2009) and a 2-0 home defeat at the beginning of Jason
Breton’s tenure (23rd August 2009). Last year’s Woolgoolga side
showed flashes of brilliance, but were primarily inconsistent, much like the
senior Storm side. Storm’s 1st Grade side have also brought in a
number of players to replace the departing and long-serving Jade Porter, Wade
Hudson, Paul and Jeff Moss and Kody Hughes. Woolgoolga will come into this match hoping to take full points away from the
International Sports Arena at Korora, but the Thunder will no doubt provide a
sterner test than last time round.
STATE CUP
The draw for the Northern New South Wales Football State Cup has finally been released, with Northern Storm being drawn against Tamworth FC. The game will take place at 1:00pm on Saturday 27 March, with the venue being Dixie Park (Hastings River Drive, Port Macquarie). Anyone who can make the trip down is more than welcome to come and watch the team play.
Tamworth FC compete in the Northern Inland Football (NIF) division and are a relatively young club, having been established in 2008. They fared reasonably well in last year's Northern Inland competition, winning 10 of their 15 regular season matches, before being knocked out in the minor-semi final by South. The encounter should be very interesting as Northern Storm look to impress in the inaugural NNSWF State Cup.

The first registration day (held on 6 February) was successful despite the inclement weather we had to contend with. Many thanks to Boral for lending us a large tarpaulin for use on the day. A reminder to all interested players, coaches and managers that the second and third registration days will take place on the forthcoming Saturdays (13th and 20th February), and that various merchandise items (old playing kits, new shirts, shorts, jackets, hoodies, tracksuit pants, denim shorts, hats, socks, boots etc) are being sold at Plantain Road Oval on the registration days. Come and find your old playing shirt and put it on your wall at home! Another reminder that first grade training will be held on Monday and Friday (at the Coffs Yacht Club) and Wednesday (at York Street).
The winner of the draw for the registration refund was Garry Tucker, who kindly donated it back to the club. The subsequent recipient was Robyn Buss. Congratulations to both of these players.
For those who are not able to attend the weekend registration days, we will be taking registrations at York Street on Wednesday night (weather permitting).

SUMMER FOOTBALL UPDATE
On the most recent matchday (Wednesday November 18), a number of matches were played which went off with great success. The tournament reached a new high for matchday attendance and perhaps the highlight of the day was a thrilling 7-6 win for the All Sorts over the Neaves in the Family competition, with Janvier Nibaruta and Tim Klingbiel each scoring a hat trick and Vincent Aholou scoring one for the All Sorts. Earlier, Yellow defeated TCFBs 2-0 courtesy of a close range Janvier Nibaruta finish from a tight angle and a long range drive from Tim Klingbiel. Don's Stormers suffered a narrow 3-2 defeat and Nathan Standing was unfortunate to score an own goal for his side in the dying minutes.
SUMMER FOOTBALL NEWS
The first matchday was played on October 21
(unofficial i.e. not counting for points), with four teams
participating in the Women's competition (mixed between junior and
senior), six teams participating in the Men's competition (with a
potential seventh team not far off) and five teams in the Family
competition. Women's matches will be played at 5:30pm, Mixed at 6:00pm, Men's at 6:30pm
and Family at 7:00pm (under lights).
