Commiserations to our 11 Boys 1st Division side who went down 4-1 to a strong Woolgoolga Dolphins team. ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING (AGM)

Northern Storm Football Club's Annual General Meeting will be held on Thursday, 24th September.  It will be held at 6pm at ABN AMRO Morgans, Suite 5, 38 Park Avenue, Coffs Harbour (next to Network Video in the drive-in parking section). After the meeting, attendees will go out for dinner at the Hoey Moey.

The club's committee members for 2010 will be decided at the meeting, so all wishing to apply for a position on the committee must first ensure they are a club member (contact Karen Filewood (see 'Committee' page) to obtain a membership form, which must be returned by 3pm on Monday 21st September) and then ensure that they attend the meeting.

JUNIOR PRESENTATION DAY

The club’s annual Presentation Day will be held on 27th September at Korora Fields with age groups 6-10 from 10am – 12pm and ages 11-16 from 1pm – 3pm.

Each player will need to be dressed in full team uniform for presentation day as team photos will be taken on the day.  After the awards are finished please hand them in as well as any uniforms they may have forgotten to return from the previous season and each team’s gear that they have used all season.

Each team is also requested to run an activity on presentation day to help raise money for trophies etc.  Activities can include things such as throwing a sponge at the coach, players v parents soccer games, kicking a ball through an obstacle course etc.  Two parents from each team are also needed to help man the canteen on the day for just half an hour.  This will ensure that there will be plenty of people to help.  Please contact Karen Filewood (see 'Committee' page) with the information on activities and the canteen roster by next Friday, 25th September.

STORM WIN CRUNCH MATCH

In arguably the most important game in the club's history, Northern Storm have pulled off a brilliant 3-1 win against Westlawn Tigers on Sunday afternoon at 2pm at Korora. Mykel Watson, Paul Moss and Luke Venn scored the decisive goals on the day, and the side received rapturous applause when the game finally finished after 101 minutes of play due to a timekeeping error. The technical staff on the day, coach Jason Breton, assistant coach Brian Lacey and Rob Manning were extremely pleased with the final outcome of the match. The win moves Northern Storm off the bottom of the table, and stands them in good stead for the remainder of the 2009 season in the fight for survival. Well done to all of the side: Simon Ellis, Frank La Spada, Jade Porter, Tom Frewen, Wade Hudson, Paul Moss, Luke Venn, Brett Lacey, Mykel Watson, Dave Gourley and Michael Turner as well as the team's 'super subs' Scott Carpenter, Tristan Albert, Tim Klingbiel, Alex Jones and Vinnie Spicicio.

Cyclones U-14’s Pizza Night
Report by Andrew Buss

Halfway through the season it was time to celebrate and what better way than pizza! So off to Amalfi Italian Pizzeria and on a VERY wet Friday night the team and supporters got together.  There was lots of laughter and eating.  The food was perfect for the occasion.  It was a great night for a great team.

Fine young ladies

Damn fine supporters.

And the person behind the camera.

ALL GROUNDS CLOSED

HOME GAMES THIS WEEK

This Sunday (21st June), Northern Storm have home games for Youth League (12pm) and Men's 1st Division (2pm) at Korora. Women's 2nd Division also have a home game at Korora at 1pm on Saturday (20th June), followed by Men's 2nd Division at 3pm (Women's 1st Division have a bye this week). All Northern Storm fans are strongly encouraged to attend the games to support the club, as we need as strong a home following as possible.

Youth League have had a great run of form recently, earning a 0-0 draw with top team Sawtell Scorpions whilst playing away, and winning 1-0 away at Woolgoolga Wolves on the weekend. This weekend, the side (under new coach Brian Lacey) are taking on a high-flying Maclean side in what should be a very entertaining game. Men's 1st Division are also taking on Maclean, who are coming off the back of two successive losses, so now is a great time for the Thunder to take advantage of the Bobcats' dip in form.

GAMES FOR THE COMING WEEK (28 May - 1 June)

At this stage, York Street has re-opened, so Men's 1st Division and Youth League training will go ahead tonight as scheduled. BCU International Stadium has also re-opened, so Thursday and Friday night's Over 35s matches will be held. However, Korora Oval has not yet been re-opened. It is due to open within the next couple of days, but players, coaches and fans should check the wet weather websites to stay informed of whether the weekend's Men's 1st Division and Youth League matches will go ahead. As for away games on the weekend, McLean Street/Forsyth Park (Coffs City United) and Coronation Park (Nambucca) are the only other grounds that have been opened at the current stage. Updates on the situation will be posted at regular intervals over the coming days. UPDATE: All grounds are now open except Coffs Showground ('The Den'), Maclean, Westlawn and Urunga.

ALL GROUNDS CLOSED

Due to the weather experienced over the past few days throughout the Coffs Coast region, Coffs Harbour City Council have elected to close all sporting fields in the area. North Coast Football have subsequently called off tonight and tomorrow night's Over 35s games. Despite no decision having been made on whether or not the weekend matches will go ahead, it is doubtful that Saturday and Sunday's matches will be played.

The aforementioned Seniors page is home to all information pertaining to the Men's 1st Division side, and any related anecdotes, match reports and the like should be sent to tim@craigscomputers.com

RESULTS OF MATCHES: 14-17 MAY

Round 5 began with the Northern Storm Lightning Bolts taking on Bellingen Blitz in the Over 35s on Thursday, with Storm going down 5-3 in a tight match. Friday night's match was between Northern Storm Thunderbolts and Orara Valley Dingoes in the Over 35s, with Northern Storm losing 9-1. Things began to get better on Saturday, with the Under 16 Boys Tornadoes winning 4-0 against Woolgoolga Sharks, and the Under 15 Boys Tornadoes winning 5-0 against Macksville Redbacks. A win was also achieved by the Under 14 Girls Cyclones (2-0 against Nambucca Heads Strikers). Battling with only 8 players, the Under 12 Girls side held Bellingen Tristrams to 2-2 until the final 6 minutes of the match, when Bellingen scored 3 goals to make the final score 5-2. Congratulations to the Storm girls for putting in a mammoth effort with 3 players down. An outnumbered and outgunned Men's 2nd Division side went down 12-1 to Grafton City on Saturday afternoon, with the Youth League side going down 6-4 in a pulsating and controversial encounter at Westlawn Tigers. The Women's 1st Division team went down 5-4 to Corindi in another controversial game where two contentious penalties were awarded to the opposition. Women's 2nd Division managed a 3-1 win against Corindi, registering their first points of the season. The weekend culminated in Saturday night's feature match between Northern Storm Thunder and Westlawn Tigers. Despite the Storm's best efforts to break through in attack, and a very heavy and late tackle on goalkeeper Simon Ellis, the Thunder were held to a 0-0 draw by a defensively well prepared Westlawn side. The draw leaves Storm with 4 points after 4 games, sitting in 7th position.

RESULTS OF FOURTH ROUND MATCHES

Northern Storm had wins in the Under 12 Boys Hurricanes (8-0 against Bellingen),  the Under 14 Girls Cyclones (3-1 against Coffs Coast Tigers), the Under 15 Boys Tornadoes (7-0 against Sawtell Scorpions), the Under 16 Boys Tornadoes (2-1 against Boambee Bombers) and the Women's 1st Division Cyclones (5-2 against South Services Sirens). The Under 13 Boys Hurricanes drew 1-1 with Bellingen, while losses were sustained by the Over 35s Thunderbolts (21-2 against Woolgoolga Sharks), the Under 14 Boys Tornadoes (3-1 against Bellingen), the Men's 2nd Division Thunder (9-1 against South Services Gunners) and the Women's 2nd Division Cyclones (2-1 against South Services Sirens). More matches will be played today, including Youth League and Men's 1st Division (at Korora), and fans are encouraged to come along and support our teams as they take on Orara Valley Dingoes at 12:00 and 2:00 respectively. Match reports should be submitted to tim@craigscomputers.com and current round match reports can be found at http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/MatchReports.aspx.UPDATE: Northern Storm's Youth League side were victorious (2-1 over Orara Valley Dingoes - Harley Parker scoring both goals), while the Men's 1st Division Thunder won 2-0 in a convincing performance against Orara (Paul Moss and Brett Lacey were the scorers).

BALL BOYS/GIRLS

NCF have requested that each club provides 4 ball boys/girls for each of the Men’s 1st Division games.  Each ball boy/girl will receive a free meal and drink, not to mention the opportunity to soak up the atmosphere (and Don’s microphone skills) and watch the clubs top players do their thing!  There are eight remaining home games for the season, with the first of these on this coming Sunday at 2pm.  In the next couple of days the details of the other 1st Division games will be posted on the clubs website so anyone interested may look the dates and times up on the site to see what days will suit them. As always, the more helpers we have, the least amount of times we will need them to help.  We are open to any offers of helpers taking turns per game half or any other arrangement they would like.  If any players are interested, could they please contact NSFC Secretary Karen Filewood (nsfcsecretary@iprimus.com.au) ASAP to arrange dates, times etc.

RESULTS OF THIRD ROUND MATCHES

Northern Storm's Over 35s Thunderbolts side went down 9-0 to Woolgoolga Sharks on Thursday night at the BCU International Stadium. Our Under 13 Boys side came out of Saturday morning's clash with Coffs United with a resounding 15-0 victory, and the Under 16 Boys side went down 6-3 in a spirited performance with the scoreline not reflecting their dominance through large parts of the match. Under 15 Boys won their match 6-0 against Nambucca Strikers at York Street, while Under 14 Girls were victorious (4-0 over Woolgoolga Pippies at York Street). Women's 2nd Division went down 7-0 and Women's 1st Division were defeated 6-1, each by Urunga. Despite playing well, our Youth League side lost 2-0 to Urunga, and our Men's 2nd Division team lost 5-0 to an experienced Orara Valley team at York Street on Saturday afternoon. In the feature match on Saturday night, Urunga defeated the Northern Storm Men's 1st Division team 4-0. Match reports can be found at http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/MatchReports.aspx.

MATCHES FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Men's First Division team will be playing at Urunga playing fields at 7pm on Saturday night. The night will be opened by our Youth League team, who play at 5pm. All fans are encouraged to come along and support the Northern Storm boys as they take on Urunga in a must-win clash.

SOCIAL KICKABOUT

On Saturday morning at Plantain Road Oval (Korora), Northern Storm Football club will be holding a social kickabout, to be attended by Men's 1st Division, Men's 2nd Division, Youth League and Over 35's. Anybody who wishes to participate is encouraged to turn up at 9:00am for a 9:15am kickoff. We hope to see you all there. UPDATE: Our Men's 1st Division goalkeeper Brad Palmer has been given a three match suspension for dissent in the match against Coffs City United Lions. Youth League's goalkeeper Simon Ellis will be the most likely player to fill in for him during the time in which he is suspended, so all supporters are urged to come along to these games to give Simon some support and encouragement.

RESULTS OF SECOND ROUND MATCHES

After the first round of matches were washed out (to be played on Saturday 6th and Sunday 7th June), the majority of second round fixtures went ahead last weekend.
The first match was at 8pm on Thursday night at the BCU International Stadium, where the Northern Storm Lightning Bolts Over 35s side earned a hard fought 2-2 draw against a well drilled Corindi side.
The Friday night Over 35s match was at 6:10pm between Northern Storm Thunderbolts and Sawtell Scorpions. Unfortunately the Thunderbolts went down 14-0 in a difficult encounter. On Saturday afternoon, the Men's 2nd Division side took on the Coffs City United Lions (winners of that division last season). The match was forfeited due to lack of numbers, but an informal game still went ahead with a number of players filling in for the side. The match was counted as a 3-0 loss by North Coast Football due to the forfeit, but the final score of the game was 7-1 to Coffs United. The match report can be found at the following page: http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/MatchReports.aspx
At 3pm on Saturday, the Women's 1st Division side, led by new coach Rob Manning, played the Coffs United Lionesses at Korora. They played well but lost 3-1 in another tough encounter. A full report of this match can be found at http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/MatchReports.aspx. Our Women's 2nd Division side also played against the Coffs United team, but lost 2-0. A lot of confidence should be taken out of these two matches which finished in respectable scorelines against some very tough opposition.
Sunday's play began in Korora at midday with the Youth League side taking on the Coffs United Lions team. The field had to be inspected before the game due to damage sustained overnight from car burnouts, which caused ruts up to 6 inches deep on the far side of the pitch. Thanks to Youth League coach Brett Ellis who had some fill-in handy on his work vehicle that he drove to the game, which allowed the game to be played and prevented last minute relocation to York Street. Many of the players from both sides had played for the Men's 2nd Division teams on the previous day, and some even featured in the Men's 1st Division match later on the same day. Northern Storm got off to a good start, but went into the break 3-0 down. They also began the second half strongly, scoring through a lucky collision between Nathan and the opposition keeper, but eventually went down 9-1.The weekend's matches culminated in the Men's 1st Division match, between Northern Storm Thunder and Coffs United Lions. Running on to the pitch to the sounds of AC/DC's electrifying 'Thunderstruck', the Storm looked threatening on a number of occasions in the first half. After going down relatively early to a contentious goal, the Storm fought hard and constructed some good passing play in the midfield. Coffs went into the break with a 1-0 lead, but the game was far from over. The Storm came out for the second half in inspired form, and although their comeback progress was slowed by a Coffs goal against the run of play, they had soon pegged the game back to 3-2 after a penalty scored by Evan Williams and a close range sliding finish by Doyle Clare. However, Northern Storm's first choice keeper Brad Palmer was sent off for dissent after a contentious decision by the referee to award Ben Mackay a goal after what appeared to be a handball, which put Coffs up 4-2. Simon Ellis was brought in as the replacement keeper after playing for the Youth League side earlier in the day, and unfortunately conceded two late goals which he could do nothing about. The final score of the match was 6-2 to Coffs, but the Storm played much better than the scoreline appears. A match report written by Rob Manning can be found at http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/MatchReports.aspx

MATCHES FOR THIS WEEKEND

The Over 35's matches tonight (Thursday 16 April) and tomorrow night (Friday 17 April) are STILL ON as the BCU International Stadium has re-opened today. York Street was officially re-opened yesterday and Plantain Road playing fields have re-opened today. All home matches for the weekend will still be on, as well as matches at the following venues, which are also OPEN:

UPDATE: Today (Friday 17 April), the following fields have also been declared OPEN:

CLEAN UP DAY

Northern Storm Football Club's clean up day was held on Monday 13 April. The store rooms, canteen, toilets and showers at York Street are now clean and much thanks must go to the following people who assisted in the clean up - Karen and Stephen Filewood, Leisa, Bev and Tim Klingbiel, Don Riley, Rob Manning, Andrew and Robyn Buss.

WET WEATHER CATCH UP GAMES

The following announcement was recently posted on the North Coast Football website:

Given our frustration with the inclement weather last weekend please be aware that the only games from R1 that must be played are:

Men's 1st, Youth, 2nd division games
Women's 1st, 2nd and 3rd division games

These games are set down to be played on the first wet weather weekend 6th and 7th June however they can be played sooner if mutually agreeable by the clubs/teams involved. eg Some clubs have chosen to play on the Anzac day Sunday 26th April. Club officials: please let the NCF office and the referees know if you choose to play games outside of the designated dates on the fixture list.

The second wet weather weekend is on 1st and 2nd August, let's hope we don't need it.

All Junior games were cancelled last week and the round is now void. We will amend the draw to show the week that Junior games start for points. Games preceding that weekend will be treated as trial matches with no points awarded. These "non-comp points" games must still be played.

Fingers crossed for some dry weather and here's hoping that the frustrations of watching football only on the TV will soon pass.

Wishing you all a good and relaxing Easter. See you on the park soon?

FLOOD DAMAGE

During the recent floods through the Coffs Harbour region, many of the sporting fields around the area suffered damage, York Street playing fields suffering some of the worst. The water level during the floods was so extreme that effluent began to overflow on to the field and as a result, the clubhouse and store room are in quite an unclean state at the present time. Northern Storm Football Club will be holding a clean-up day on Monday 13 April (Easter Monday) commencing at 9:30am and all are welcome to come and help the club out in order to get the clubhouse and store room to a reasonable state for use during games and training.  Volunteers are also required to assist in the installation of the new fencing. As previously announced on the Coffs Harbour City Council website, all fields in the region have officially been closed until Monday, at which point the council will review their conditions.

ALL ROUND 1 GAMES CANCELLED

Coffs Harbour Council have advised that all sports grounds are closed in Coffs Harbour for the coming weekend (Round 1). All Coffs Harbour area junior and senior matches have been cancelled.
Updates on the state of the fields can be accessed on the following pages: http://www.coffsharbour.nsw.gov.au/www/html/3121-sporting-grounds-closures-.asp

Of these teams, 24 were entered by Northern Storm, only three less than Woolgoolga, with 27. We were followed by Boambee and Bellingen with 19 teams each, Sawtell and Coffs Tigers with 18 teams each and Coffs United with 17 teams. Congratulations to all players and teams who have registered for the 2009 season - it is a fantastic effort and a great contribution to the club as a whole.

LATE REGISTRATION FEES

As of tomorrow (Monday 23rd March), late fees will apply for all players who wish to register with the club and have not done so already. The Northern Storm Football Club sign up days were on the 7th, 14th and 21st of February at Plantain Road Oval and Park Beach Plaza - these sign up days have now finished. However, any players, coaches or managers wishing to sign up to the club may still do so by contacting a Committee Member (members' contact details can be found at http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/Committee.aspx).

NORTH COAST FOOTBALL COACHING COURSE

North Coast Football are running a Level 1 Coaching Accreditation course on the 21st and 28th of March (both Saturdays), at the York Street playing fields (see http://www.northernstormfc.com/NorthernStorm/Maps.aspx for directions). The fee for the course is $125. Next season (2010), all junior coaches will have to be accredited (i.e. have completed a Level 1 coaching course), otherwise they are not permitted to coach their respective teams. This is a great opportunity for any current or prospective future coaches of Northern Storm sides, so all are encouraged to take part in the course.

MEN'S 1ST DIVISION - ROUND 1 DRAW

The draw for the opening round of the Men's 1st Division has been issued by North Coast Football. Northern Storm men will be playing Sawtell on 5 April (with the time and venue yet to be decided. This should prove to be a mouth-watering encounter with the Storm men taking on former coach Ian Glover and former player Lee Winkler. All fans are encouraged to come along to what should be a great game of football - watch this space for the time and venue of the match.

Recycled stadium fencing helps out local football clubs

TWO local football clubs have gained ‘new’ fencing thanks to Council’s policy of re-use and recycle. The old fencing around the BCU International Stadium had to be replaced recently as it was no longer secure. As the Stadium is a licensed venue, government legislation requires that appropriate security measures must be put in place to avoid the risk of unauthorised entry. But, as some sections of the old fencing were still in good condition, Council’s Sports Unit offered local sporting clubs the posts and wire – at no cost – for use at their own grounds.Sawtell and District Football Club and Northern Storm Football Club were the first groups to respond and they have both now received ‘new’ fencing for the sports grounds at which they are based. “Council’s advocacy of the principles of re-use and recycle is not confined to reclaimed water and rubbish, but is always also applied to other resources as well,” said Stephen Sawtell, Council’s General Manager.“In many instances, specific local community groups benefit – such as the football clubs with the free fencing.“But Council itself re-uses materials wherever it can. During any construction project, any materials – such as soil – that cannot be reused at the same site, are directed to other programmes. Similarly, old concrete that has to be removed or old road surfaces that are being replaced are often used as the sub-base layer for other road rehabilitation projects.“By re-using materials and equipment, Council is able to save money – which is a benefit for the whole community,” he said.

Northern Storm Football Club will be erecting their fencing along the Arthur Street boundary to secure the area for junior games, providing a barrier from the road for players and balls.

COACH/MANAGER ORIENTATION MORNING

An Orientation Morning will be held on 7th March, 9:30pm at the York Street playing fields in which all Storm's coaches and managers are invited. Kits will be handed out to assist each coach and manager for the 2009 season and talks will be given by NCF's Director of Coaching, Richard Evans and possibly a representative from the Referee's Standing Committee.

We look forward to seeing you there!

SPECIAL MEETING!

The Committee decided that as the club is guided only by Fair Trading’s model rules, a Constitution would be created to provide guidelines with more specific detail on running our Club, more relative to the sport of football. The Northern Storm Football Club held a Special General Meeting on Wednesday 4th February 2009 at the Hoey Moey to adopt the Northern Storm Football Club’s Constitution.  The Constitution was adopted unanimously by those who attended the meeting and will come into operation as soon as it is approved by North Coast Football.  Many thanks must be given to NCF representative, Nigel Hayes, for coming along to our meeting.

If anyone has any queries, please do not hesitate to contact either myself or any member of the committee.  It is hoped that the current and prospective Committees will find their job a little easier having these extra guidelines to help lead the Club into the future.

7-A-SIDE SEASON FINISHES

The Hoey Moey 7-A-Side Summer Football competition proudly presented by Watsons and Jayco has finished (10th February 2009). The minor premiers of the All Age Men's division were the Dim Sims and the premiers were Sawtell FC (defeating Gentlemen's Club in the grand final). Thanks and congratulations to all players and teams who took part!

A HUGE WELCOME TO THE NEW COACHES!

The club and committee would like to extend a huge welcome to the two new Senior Coaches, Rob Harbour and Rob Manning.  Rob Harbour will be coaching the Men's 1st Division, while Rob Manning will be coaching the Women's Division.

Safe Harbour for the Storm

Northern Storm has been on the verge of bigger things in North Coast Football's top flight for a couple of seasons now without actually fulfilling their potential.  Club president Don Riley believes that's about to change after signing Rob Harbour as the Men's 1st Division coach for 2009.

Last year Harbour almost lead Boambee to a premiership and now the Storm is hoping he can weave a similar magic with them.

"I reckon Rob will bring a lot of experience and I guess an injection of new energy with his enthusiasm and professionalism," Riley said.

"It's what helped Boambee get to where they did last year."

"We want to try and get into the top four again.  We slipped a little bit last year but that's where we want to be."

Harbour says that he can't wait for the new season to begin.

"It's a new challenge and I think it will be an interesting season with the change," he said.

"I'm quietly confident we'll do well but I'm not shouting that from the rooftops."

The new coach believes that getting plenty of points early in the season will be a big goal for his team.

"In the past this team has had a slow start to the season and it's brought about their downfall," he explained.

"So we really want to hit the ground running this year."

Harbour won't be a complete stranger in his new surroundings as fellow former Boambee man Rob Manning is coming to Korora to coach the women's team and there are a few Eagles girls who will now don the white and blue of the Storm.

"The influx of the new girls should strengthen the squad and I think the improvement will come from there," Manning said.
